Room 2 Manoeuvre is now seeking applications from young choreographers based in and around Edinburgh and the central belt region of Scotland. 2018 is the Year of Young People with numerous events planned to celebrate our nation’s younger generations. Room 2 Manoeuvre, alongside a number of other partner organisations will be presenting a unique dance experience, At Your Leisure (29th October to 3rdNovember 2018), as part of the YOYP programme. At Your Leisure will merge live dance performance with sports activity. Imagine a dance performance taking place in a squash court, swimming pool or gym room and that’s what we are aiming for. We are now looking to invite a young choreographer to create a short dance piece on East Lothian Youth Dance Company, which will then be presented at At Your Leisure.

Requirements as follows:

  • At the time of the project you must be aged 26 or under.
  • You should be working primarily in the field of dance and movement.
  • You should possess a recognisable degree, or other qualification, in dance and movement. If a candidate does not have such a qualification, then they must have a  strong track record and level of experience in the field of dance and movement.
  • You should have a track record in creating and presenting performance work. This can take the form of touring your own work, presentations with colleagues, work on other youth dance companies, scratch performances and so on. In addition to this, you should have a track record of working with young people in a creative context through teaching or otherwise.
  • The ideal applicant should have a flexible attitude to working conditions and have an awareness of creating a positive environment for the young people taking part.
  • You should possess your own public liability insurance and be fully disclosed to work with young people (such as PVG / Enhanced disclosure).
  • Due to the location and scheduling of rehearsals and the final presentation, the ideal candidate should be based in or around the Edinburgh area or at least within central belt region of Scotland. Applicants from further afield are welcome to apply but should be aware that travel assistance will be limited. In this sense it would be advantageous, but not essential, that applicants would have a clean driving license and their own vehicle or access to one.
  • You should be willing to take the lead regarding decisions on all aspects relating to this position that would include, but may not be limited to, content, costume, music, technical considerations and some aspects of scheduling.
  • The applicant will be expected to be able to work in collaborative manner with associated partner organisations and agree to use her/his best efforts to co-operate with publicity, photography and promotion of the overall At Your Leisure project.

The brief:

To create a dance performance with members of ELYDC of no shorter than 15 mins duration. The content must have a clear relationship to sport in some manner. As a guide, some examples would be:

  • Using movements found within sporting disciplines as a physical vocabulary
  • Using sport as a metaphor for a wider theme/issue
  • Using sporting equipment and/or a sport related environment to explore a particular idea

Rehearsals at Musselburgh Grammar School and The Brunton as follows:

  • Every Monday at 6 – 8pm, from the 27th August 2018 until 29th October 2018. This is a provision of 10 x 2hr sessions with the possibility of more rehearsal time if required. The final presentation will be on the 2nd and 3rd November 2018, currently to be held at Musselburgh Sports Centre.

What we provide:

  • A fee of £1400.00 (including prep), show budget for costume and/or props and a modest travel subsidy.
  • Mentorship from Room 2 Manoeuvre (if required).
  • Technical support for the final presentation. There may be some limits to what can be achieved technically due to the nature of presenting performances in non-traditional spaces.

Please send in a statement of no longer than 1 page A4 with information about your dance background, the type of work you’re making and/or interested in and a proposal that tells us how you might potentially explore the subject of sport.

In addition, please supply online links to any examples of your work, an up to date CV, your full contact information, a copy of your PVG / Enhanced Disclosure certificate and a copy of a document that shows proof of the required age.

2018 is the Year of Young People with numerous events planned to celebrate our nation’s younger generations. Room 2 Manoeuvre is very excited to announce, as part of this programme, we will be presenting a unique dance experience, At Your Leisure. We are now looking for 6 – 8 young people aged 8 – 26 to form a young persons steering group to help programme, design and deliver At Your Leisure to various venues across East Lothian.

Who are we and what is it? Room 2 Manoeuvre is a dance company based at The Brunton, that specialises in mixing hip hop, contemporary dance and physical theatre. We also deliver live events and we are really excited about this one. At Your Leisure is a unique cultural event that will merge live dance performance with sports activity. Imagine a dance performance taking place in a squash court, swimming pool or gym room and that’s what we are aiming for. It will consist of a programme of International and UK dance companies, each presenting a performance based around a different sport related theme. In addition, this programme will offer opportunities to participate in both dance and sport activities and workshops. All of the activity will take place at Enjoy leisure facilities across East Lothian. At Your Leisure will run for approximately 1 week from the 29th October to 3rd November 2018. All activities will be accessible to young people with a number of additional public events.

What is involved? As part of the steering group you will be asked to contribute to key decision making processes that will affect the overall delivery of At Your Leisure. This will include, but may not be limited to, performance programme curating, event design, production, marketing, planning, promotion and event delivery. You would be required to attend regular meetings from March – October. This will be broken up roughly as follows:

End of April – Programme Curating

End of April to June – Planning, Design

August to October – Marketing, Production, Event Delivery

Meetings will be primarily held at The Brunton during afternoons/evenings and/or weekends and made accessible to those still attending school. Meetings will last for no longer than 2hrs. Room 2 Manoeuvre will endeavour to pay an appropriate per diem to steering group members. Any travel expenses will be covered. Confirmation of per diem rates and meeting times are tbc following the results of this application process.

Who are we looking for? The ideal candidate (as well as being aged 8 – 26) should be resident in East Lothian or Edinburgh area. You should have a strong interest in theatre, dance and/or live performance. This interest could lie in viewing, performing, making, producing, promoting, designing, planning etc… You do not need to have any experience, but demonstrate a strong keenness to get involved. Room 2 Manoeuvre encourages applications from young people from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, as well as those who would identify as disabled.

Why should you take part? You will have the opportunity to play an integral role in the realisation of what will be one of the most unique cultural events to take place in Scotland during 2018. You will have the chance to gain and/or strengthen skills required to work as a team to achieve specific goals and meet new people throughout the process. Furthermore, you will gain confidence in decision making and valuable experience in the areas of event production and the curating and design of cultural events.
